The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The holiday season gives us so much to be thankful for - and so many ways to celebrate! This Saturday, December 4, Blooming Grove will be celebrating a town-wide Old-Fashioned Christmas, complete with a parade at 10:30, caroling in the park, and pictures with Santa. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the park, and we here at the Inn will be holding an open house. Feel free to stop by for a cookie, see the decorations, and say hello.

Later in the day, Ricky Skaggs and the Kentucky Thunder will be playing at the Palace Theatre in Corsicana. Here’s a little taste of what’s in store:

Hope you enjoyed that as much as we do.

Cheryl Dunn

Christian Country music artist Cheryl Dunn will be in the area for a concert 6:30 PM, October 24 at Navarro Mills Baptist Church. Entrance to the concert is free; a love offering will be collected.

Cheryl will also be performing the previous evening in a private concert that will benefit When Are We Going Home Ministries, a remarkable organization that serves children with special needs, including children experiencing life-threatening and life-changing illnesses, and their family and friends.

B&Bs for Vets

We are now proudly taking part in B&Bs for Vets. Participating inns and bed & breakfasts are providing rooms the evening of November 10 for active or retired servicemen and women as a thank you for the sacrifice they make for our country. Please pass the word along - participating B&Bs are located throughout the country. Any serviceman or woman you know, who would appreciate a getaway, may be able to find a place nearby.

Up for a train ride?

Located in the Blooming Grove, we're just a 90 minute drive from the Texas State Railroad. This is a just plain old GREAT way to have a good time. Running between depots located at Palestine and Rusk, the train offers a beautiful ride through the countryside, as well as special events to appeal to a wide range of tastes.

At different times throughout the year, the railroad offers such events as dinner trains or wild west re-enactments. The current offerings provide something for the entire family. Throughout October, you can enjoy a Day Out with Thomas, ride the Great Pumpkin Patch Express, and even check out the Haunted Maze during the days immediate preceding Halloween. For those of a more tender sensibility (this innkeeper included!), train rides departing the Maydelle Depot will visit the (non-haunted) Corn Maze through October 24.

And, starting in November, you can even ride the Polar Express. A trip to the North Pole is a sure-fire way to jump start the holiday spirit.

The weather is simply gorgeous - temps have dropped to delightful levels. It's still warm enough in the afternoon for shorts, but cool enough in the evenings to enjoy snuggling with a blanket.

Leaves haven't begun turning yet here, but flowering plants who endured the summer heat are feeling revived and blooming to show their own appreciation of the cooler weather.

Alumni and student associations are just around the corner, and we'll be enjoying hosting visitors to these events over the next few weeks.

In the mean time, some of us are heading over to Corsicana this afternoon to see Trout Fishing in America. If you're unfamiliar with them, I encourage you to take a listen. Trout Fishing in America came to the attention of many as they became parents - because of their wonderful, all around family friendly music (appealing to parents and kids). But one of this innkeeper's favorite albums is Over the Limit; written for adults, full of cuts that will pull at your heart and your memories. And make your feet start moving, too...
